I left my Djembe toI have a new skin put on and when it was returned two weeks later, OMG, Wow, what a difference in the sound. There is a local drum store in my area that's replaced the head on my other drum and there is a wortld of difference in the quality of workmanship. Highly, Highly recommend Drum Skull."

Well, I got my Big Djalla yesterday (great packing) and played it for 2 hours! I'm so happy with it. It is beautiful! The wood and carving are superb (thank you Guinea artists and folks who forged that connection). Pictures are one thing, but to hold it and play it is a whole other(worldly) experience. This drum is the real deal! The sound that comes out of this drum is unbelievable! You're right- I'm STOKED! (But I don't feel worthy ;) You guys did an outstanding job putting it together and all of Tony's recommendations were right on! There are so many variables that can make a great sound come from a hand drum. My thinking was that if DrumSkull drums were all that folks say they are, then all factors would be controlled for (great interior carving, proportions, wood quality, rope and skin choice/quality, and true professional tuning) to produce fabulous sound, except for my technique. Now, I am sure that if the drum doesn't sound right- IT'S ME (no excuses)- and changing my hands just a little coaxes that amazing sound out. In just the short time I've played it, I even now sound better on my other (lesser) drums. "Oh, THAT'S what they are supposed to sound like!" It's so worth it to get a really great drum. No, it's so worth it to get a DrumSkull drum!
Now, I look forward to long hours of making my Big Djalla sing! Add me to that long queue of satisfied customers, please.

"I absolutely Love and appreciate my instruments that you have created. I have three Drumskull Djembes: An Ivory Coast "solo" djembe, A djembe from Guinea, and my first DSD Djembe from Mali. I use all of my drums within the performances as a solo, and in my group. You can achieve something great on manufactured drums, something really cool, no doubt, but when I heard my Kenkeni playing the heartbeat instead of the rail tom, and the dununba instead of the floor tom --- let’s just say it changed my life forever. There are not just one or two sweet spots on your drums like there are on most kit toms; on my Kenkeni there so many different sweet spots that you can make music with one drum alone. Do that on a single kit tom? I’m not sure that’s going to happen, certainly not in such a pleasing way. It’s hard to convey exactly, but an African drum sounds like a living thing and a manufactured drum does not. I have to set the kenkeni exactly the same way every time so my mental mapping of the calf skin head can be relied upon because I want it to sing when I want it to and thump at me when the time comes. It does exactly that. The other two drums are the same way."

"As a musician you should always buy the best instrument you can afford. And before you buy an instrument or more gear, ask yourself 'how is this going to improve my playing?' When I buy a drum its an investment in my playing and myself. I take lessons, practice and try to play the very best I can every time I play. Drumskull drums help me reach to my highest aspirations and are of the absolute highest quality.
Yes you are going to have to pay more than you would like, but there are no better Djembes and Dunun's. Cost is relative, and a good quality guitar will run you thousands of dollars. A $500 dollar drum will last you a lifetime and if you kept it 20 years that would only be about $2 dollars a month for playing a sick djembe. I have seen a few instances where people have come close to their level of work, but I have yet to see them surpassed by anyone in terms of quality. Top level shells, fresh African skins with American rope and materials. Hell yeah.
The sound of the Dunun after the heads have been broken in is exceptional. Listen to the tone of cheaper duns: they can sound muffled and/ or always have one side that does not have good projection/tone. With Drumskulls the Dunun notes are going to rumble, cleanly. The Kenkeni is going to cut through brightly, if you have it tuned properly. This allows you to play with more finesse/dynamics than people think possible from duns.
This is also a small business and the service is as top-notch as the drums."

"The drum itself is sounds awesome. The tones and slap are supreme, and the bass note is better than I originally thought... The orange rope really compliments the tone of the wood, and I really like the grain patterns down near the bottom of the drum. It's gorgeous in a very refined way and doesn't need elaborate carvings, or other embellishment. The wood reminds me a bit of the "red stringy" eucalyptus that my dijeridu is made from. I was quite impressed with heft of the drum too - my heaviest djembe yet (in every way :-) ) Thanks for all your help, Ryan! I'm going to debut it in a show today with African Culture Connection. One of my fellow drummers turned to another djembe player in our group when he heard my drum sound and said 'We're in trouble now!'"

"Anyone interested in truly quality djembes and dununs should check out (Drumskull). I can personally attest that they have some of the finest instruments around. If you are interested in QUALITY djembes and dunduns, go check out their site. I do not give out endorsements lightly, but I can wholeheartedly say that these guys have some of the finest djembes around (particularly their Guinea djembes). They personally finish the shells (ensuring that the rims are perfect) and head each drum. They also have both solid wood dunduns from Guinea and stave dunduns that they make with meticulous care. All of their drums are finely crafted with skill, love, and respect. I highly recommend them."
